시카고를 배경으로 교회음악부터 재즈에 이르는 활발한 연주 활동뿐 아니라 미국의 주요 출판사를 통해 수많은 저서를 남기고 있는 매리앤 킴이 한국에서 처음으로 선보이는 피아노 독주곡집이다. 본 독주곡집은 우리 귀에 익숙하고 많이 불리는 CCM과 찬송가 곡들을 모아 피아노 독주로 연주하기에 적합하도록 편곡되었으며 예배 중 특별찬양으로 또는 연주회에서 사용되기에도 부족함이 없을 정도로 수준 높은 연주를 선사한다. 기존의 수많은 리하모니제이션 책들과는 달리, 클래식 작곡 기법을 기반으로 재즈적인 요소를 결합한 매리앤 킴만의 독특하고 신선한 화성과 리듬을 활용하여 다양한 스타일의 편곡을 구사하였다. 각 곡의 악보와 함께 수록된, 변형된 코드와 리듬에 대한 이론적 설명을 통하여 독자로 하여금 수준 높은 연주와 함께 이론적인 면을 학습하는 데도 도움이 되도록 하였다.

As an editor for a large American music publisher, I receive many manuscripts from composers who would like us to add their work to our catalog. I’m always looking for arrangers who have their own unique “voice” at the keyboard, who can bring new freshness to favorite hymns and Gospel songs. It was my delight a few years ago to receive Marianne Kim’s first collection of hymn arrangements and to feel that we were “kindred spirits” when I played through her manuscript. Our company immediately agreed to publish her book, and since then, we have added several more of her books for piano solo, piano four-hands, and organ, as well as choral arrangements.
Marianne Kim is a multi-talented woman who understands classical, jazz, and traditional church music from the inside out. Her arrangements display familiarity with many styles, and always sound authentic and musical, with delightful harmonizations in a modern style.
